Fresh thyme equivalent?

My recipe calls for 8 fresh thyme sprigs. I could only find ground thyme and dried thyme leaves at my store. Which should I use for my recipe and how much to equal the 8 sprigs? It's a recipe for pan seared pork chops with cider sauce (the thyme sprigs are to be used to flavor the sauce, then discarded before spooning the sauce over the chops).
